Internet Retailer, which covered the Commerce Department\u2019s report last week, noted that the Commerce Department\u2019s retail sales data included items not normally bought online, such as fuel and automobiles.<\/p>\n<p>Excluding fuel and car sales, Internet Retailer\u2019s calculations showed e-commerce growth slightly higher at 15.6 percent, with online retail sales representing 11.7 percent of total retail sales versus the 8.1 percent reported by the Commerce Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUS online retail sales grew faster in 2016 than they have in the past three years,\u201d reports Internet Retailer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-117 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/kyleohare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IR-ecommerce-sales-2016-300x265.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"482\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyleohare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IR-ecommerce-sales-2016-300x265.png 300w, https:\/\/kyleohare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IR-ecommerce-sales-2016.png 664w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Internet Retailer says total retail sales \u2014 factoring out fuel, automobiles, restaurant sales and bar sales from the Commerce Department\u2019s report \u2014 reached $3.375 trillion in 2016 \u2014 up 3.9 percent from 2015\u2019s total retail sales.<\/p>\n<p>Going by Internet Retailer\u2019s numbers, e-commerce accounted from 41.6 percent of all retail sales growth last year. Internet Retailer also added that the majority of last year\u2019s online sales growth was a result of Amazon. From Internet Retailer\u2019s report:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Here\u2019s proof: The total value of transactions from US consumers on Amazon.com reached $147.0 billion last year, a 31.3% increase compared with $112.0 billion in 2015, according to Internet Retailer and ChannelAdvisor Corp. estimates.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Using these numbers, Internet Retailer says Amazon drove 65.9 percent of US e-commerce growth last year \u2014 and 27.4 percent of total retail sales growth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US Department of Commerce reports total e-commerce sales in 2016 reached $394.9 billion.
